Better Alternatives for Hydrating After Children Exercise

Most store bought sports drinks have a lot of fake flavors, are high in sugar and are made with highly processed ingredients that do your body no good, specially for young kids. At Stretch-and-Grow Winston, we advocate healthy habits and better alternatives. That is why we want to discuss why you should start making your own sports drinks for yourself and your kids and share with you a quick simple recipe to get you started.

Reasons to Start Making Your Own Sport Drink

  • It is easy and not very time consuming.
  • It requires minimal ingredients that you most likely already have in your home.
  • It saves you money.
  • It provides all the benefits of a commercial sport drink but it is healthier and more natural.
  • You can sweeten it as much or as little as you´d like and adjust the flavors according to your liking.
  • You can experiment with as many flavors as you´d like.

Quick Electrolyte Drink Recipe

One of the most important factors to help your child do well and make the most of any physical activity is to keep them well hydrated. To make a simple and quenching sports drink all you need is about 1/4 cup of lemon juice, 1/3 cup of mandarin juice or any other favorite citrus and a pinch of sea salt, add in about another 1/3 cup of drinking water, and honey to your liking and let it cool in the fridge. Make sure you don´t over do the honey it should be just a hint of sweet but not so much that it doesn´t quench your thirst. You can try adding in other ingredients to your liking such as a few peppermint leaves while it sits in the fridge or experiment with your favorite flavors and fruits. When you run out of your own sports drink and want a healthy alternative you can also try natural coconut water, its a great alternative and naturally contains more potassium than Gatorade.
