Why You Should Reduce and Monitor Television Time

Sitting in front of the television should not be a big part of your child´s daily routine. Sure, they can watch educational shows, and learn a few things from that, but watching too much television is far from positive. Excessive amounts of screen time have many negative side effects that can intervene with your child´s health and hinder other skills and abilities.

The Negative Effects of Television on Your Child

  • Promotes bad eating habits.
  • Reduces their energy levels and leads to a more sedentary lifestyle.
  • Leads to violent behavior.
  • Exposes them to negative content and dangerous behavior.
  • Disturbs sleep and affects the body´s ability to fall asleep at an adequate time.
  • Can hinder a child´s performance in school and prevent them from completing homework and assignments

How Much Television Is Too Much?

Like with all things the key is an adequate balance. We are not saying that they should never be allowed to watch television but rather that it should be done moderately and with much care in regards to what it is they watch. It is recommended that children older than 2 years old of age watch no more than 2 hours of true quality television a day. However, studies show that most children easily watch over 4 hours of television a day. This can be reduced by allowing them to participate in more educational and engaging activities such as sports, fitness programs, clubs and other after-school activities that promote healthier choices.
