As parents, we want the best for our children, and that includes building a foundation for a healthy heart. It's never too early to start! By encouraging heart healthy habits from a young age, we can help our little ones grow into strong and healthy adults.

Why Heart Health Matters

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in adults, but many risk factors can be reduced with healthy lifestyle choices starting in childhood. By teaching children about healthy habits now, we empower them to make good decisions for their future.

Get Moving!

The most important thing you can do for your child's heart health is to encourage regular physical activity. Aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise most days of the week. This can include anything that gets their heart pumping and their bodies moving:

  • Active Play: Running, jumping, playing tag, riding bikes, swimming – the possibilities are endless!
  • Organized Sports: Team sports like soccer, basketball, or baseball are a great way to exercise and learn teamwork.
  • Dance: Dancing is a fun and engaging way to improve cardiovascular health and coordination.

Fueling Little Bodies

A balanced diet is crucial for a healthy heart. Focus on:

  • Fruits and Vegetables: Aim for at least five servings a day.
  • Whole Grains: Choose whole-grain bread, pasta, and cereals over refined grains.
  • Lean Protein: Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and lentils in their diet.
  • Healthy Fats: Foods like avocados, nuts, and seeds provide essential fatty acids.

Limit:

  • Sugary Drinks: Soda, juice, and sports drinks are loaded with sugar. Opt for water or milk instead.
  • Processed Foods: Processed foods often contain high amounts of sodium, unhealthy fats, and added sugars.

Heart Healthy Habits Start at Home

Making healthy choices as a family sets a positive example for your children. Cook healthy meals together, plan active outings, and limit screen time in favor of physical activity. By instilling these habits early on, you'll give your child the gift of a healthy heart for life!
