Let's face it, not all children are incredibly active and immediately thrilled at the thought of physical activity. Although many children do tend to love getting up and moving, it is more common nowadays to see children that would rather stay in the couch playing video games than go outside and play freeze tag. This kind of lifestyle preferences will continue to be embedded in a child as they grow if they do not learn better habits and healthier practices. That is why today at  Stretch-n-Grow in Salem, we want to share a few easy and effective ways to motivate your child to be more active and improve their wellness.

How to Help Your Child Be More Active

  • Limit screen time. Children need limits, especially when it comes to activities that are not highly productive. Watching television, playing video games and spending time on the computer or mobile phone are activities that may entertain but are not always beneficial and should be limited so that children can spend more time in activities that are more constructive.
  • Do physical activities as a family. The best way to encourage healthy habits is by making it a fun activity that you also take part in. Watching others participate in fun games that promote exercise can help motivate children to enjoy physical activity.
  • Encourage them with positive statements. Stating encouraging phrases or positive statements when children participate in sports or other exercise activities can help them be more eager to do so. Harsh criticism or negative words will immediately discourage anyone and prevent them from enjoying or wanting to participate in those kinds of activities. That is why it is important to always use inspiring words to highlight the positive things your child does as they take part in physical activities. Statements such as:¨ I´m so proud of how hard you work when you exercise¨ or ¨It is inspiring to watch you make healthier choices.¨
